Telenor: building in-house safety coaches
A two-day Behaviour Based Safety programme that trained Telenor staff as internal safety coaches.
Telenor wanted to strengthen behavioural discipline in its safety processes by building internal coaching capability. The coach role asks people to observe work without joining it, intervene in proportion to the risk, ask before guiding, and keep conversations safe while addressing unsafe conditions.
What we did
Results
Participants linked the exercises directly to real pressures: coordination under constraints, unclear ownership and communication breakdowns.
What we observed
From Day 1 to Day 2, participants moved from jumping in to fix tasks towards observing first and asking questions. When they hit an unexpected constraint, they identified it, raised it appropriately and adapted, which is the behaviour the coach role needs on site.
What we did
- Two days of practice-led training based on behaviour-based safety principles
- Practice in observing work and intervening safely
- Hands-on exercises under time and resource pressure
- Exercises on guidance, responsibility and safe execution
Results
- 93% Net Promoter Score
Key points
